Recycling trash is a wonderful way to make beautiful treasures for your Christmas tree. Make a stocking cap ornament using an empty toilet paper tube and yarn. No one will see the tube, and best yet, there is no crocheting or knitting involved. Let the kids help with this inexpensive craft. They can make a stocking cap ornament for each child in their classroom for Christmas party favors.
Things You Will Need:
Empty toilet paper tube
4-ply, worsted-weight yarn
Measure and mark an empty toilet paper roll with four equally spaced sections. Use a craft knife to pierce slits in the cardboard at the marks, then insert the blade of scissors in the slits to cut the sections apart. You will have four rings approximately 1 1/8 inches wide. This tutorial is for one stocking cap. Set three of the rings aside for making more ornaments.
Cut 36, 9-inch lengths from 4-ply, worsted-weight yarn.
Fold one length of yarn in half. Insert the folded end through the ring until the folded end is sticking out one side and the cut ends are sticking out the other. Fold the cut ends over the side of the ring and insert them through the fold of the yarn. Pull the cut ends to cinch the yarn around the ring. This is a lark’s head knot. Adjust the knot so that the fold and cut fringe is on one side of the ring. Continue around the ring with the remaining yarn lengths.
Cut a 12-inch length of yarn and set it aside. Smooth, untangle and gather the fringe together. Wrap the yarn length around the gathered fringe. Tie the ends in a knot and then tie in a bow. Trim the bow ends. This forms the stocking cap shape and the tassel on top of the cap.
Thread more yarn on a large-eyed needle. With the bow of the ornament facing you, insert the needle from one side of the cap to the other, just under the yarn that is holding the gathered fringe together. Bring the yarn up on both sides of the stocking cap. Cut the yarn the desired length of the hanger. Hold the ends together and tie an overhand knot 1/2-inch from the end.
This stocking cap can also be made using bulky or lighter weight yarns, but you will need to adjust the amount of yarn lengths needed to cover the entire ring.
Consider making these caps for other winter celebrations. Pink, red or white yarn would look adorable for Valentine’s Day. Cut and glue small felt hearts around the brim of the hat.
