We’ve all been there – trying to stay on a healthy eating plan while it seems that every day you turn around and someone’s having a birthday party (cupcakes!), bringing in whatever the kids are selling (Girl Scout cookies!) or gathering the gang to go out for happy hour after work (hot wings and beer!). A simple day at the office turns out to be a not-so-simple quest to stay well within your caloric range. While it will take quite a bit of willpower to avoid the bowl of M&M’s on the desk each day, there are a few other tips to managing your workspace so you are more successful with your healthy lifestyle.
As the beginning of the New Year just passed, most of us are hanging on to our New Year’s resolutions by a thread – and your environment has a huge impact on how successful you are on any healthy eating plan or lifestyle change. Managing your environment at home is easy – you have say in what you bring in the kitchen and what kind of temptations you stash in the cupboards. The office isn’t as easy – especially when you work with plenty of people who aren’t as concerned with their weight or healthy lifestyle as you are. Here are a few tips to taking back your workspace so it works for you:
- · Try to have the food put in a certain area of the office – perhaps the break room or somewhere you don’t frequent. If there are tempting brownies or goodies lying around the office, it will be harder to use the whole “out of sight, out of mind” tactic. You will find that many co-workers are considerate and will follow your lead if you just ask.
- · Bring your own snacks – Find that you start craving everything in the office around 2 p.m.? Instead of walking into the mounds of temptations in the break room, try using other methods to boosting your energy during the afternoon slump. Take a brisk walk around the building, head outside for a few minutes of sunshine while you listen to your music or read, or just chat with a friend for a few minutes to ward off the temptations. Bringing a delicious variety of snacks is also helpful – yogurt, nuts, cheese or fruit will satisfy your cravings without the calories.
- · Budget for outings – Love hanging out with friends after work for a cocktail? Keep that in mind when you mindlessly reach for the stale cookies in the kitchen – don’t waste your calories or ‘points’ on things you don’t really enjoy. An after work drink with friends is the perfect guilt-free reward if you’ve avoided the junk during the workday.
Working around others is never easy – especially when you want to stay healthy and on track with an eating plan. Adopt some of these tips, modify them when you need to and be prepared – going in armed with motivation is one of the best ways to be successful!
