After so many imitations and wannabes, the long waited mega-hit ISO game Temple Run has finally arrived to the Google Play store. Since its release on March 27 by creator Imangi Studios, the extremely addictive game has reached 1M hits and received a 4.5 out of 5 rating grade on the android. This is surely the game that will keep you busy during your spare time with the never-stopping tomb raider look-alike, running to his/her forever foreseen death.
Right after nipping what seems to be a golden cursed idol, you must escape, or at least try to, from the Evil Demon Monkeys who look more like faceless mistreated animals wanting to give you a bad pounding. You’ll run and run and never stop running, as your character rambles through an endless fixed obstacle course that sort of resembles the Great Wall of China. While you navigate your runner from a 3D third perspective angle, you will encounter “T” intersections that may lead you to the next wall or more possibly to a series of cliffs, wooden docks, dirty moats, slimy rocks, and fire spitting out from dragon-like statues. But all that could easily be avoided with just a touch of your finger. Swiping left or right will change the characters direction at intersections. Sliding up or down will help the runner dodge a hindrance by either jumping over it or sliding under it. You can also tilt your handheld side to side to move within the provided space allowing the character to collect coins and run through narrow bridges.
The farther your raider runs the faster he/she goes. Though you shouldn’t worry too much about crashing into pretty much anything, since the app contain “powerups” to help you along the way. By using a portion of your collected coins you can turn invisible to effortlessly avoid any obstacle while running. You can also use a boost to speed up your character for a small amount of time. The remaining powerups involve changing value of the coins. There are also “utilities” only to be used once per run like the resurrection wings and the mega booster. Currently there are 6 unlockable characters though none seem to have any special effect on the game.
The gameplay isn’t the only reason why so many people love Temple Run. Its 3D graphics is filled with a hue of dark colors, giving it that mysterious and foggy scenery. The drum beat music sets the perfect tone as it brings out that unique tribal sound. Everything on this app makes the game too hard to put down. But of course, the game is far from perfect. Eventually Temple Run can become annoying with unexpected death pits waiting for you right at a turning point. Gotta hone those quick reflexes. Also, many people have complained the app tends to freeze a few times, taking the fun out the game. And one of the biggest setbacks is the amount of battery life it takes. I can assure you, your phone won’t last longer than 5 hours. However, not one phone is the same. The App runs flawlessly on my Droid incredible 2.
