Amber Heard was born on April 22, 1986, in Austin, Texas. Her father was a contractor, and her mother worked as an Internet researcher for the State of Texas. As a child, she attended a Catholic academy until her junior year in high school. It was at that time that she decided to leave school to pursue a career in acting and modeling. When Heard was a teenager, she was active in her school drama department. She also appeared in a number of local commercials. After leaving high school at the age of 17, Heard first tried modeling in New York. She later moved to Los Angeles to give acting a try.
After arriving in LA, Heard landed roles on several TV shows, as well as two music videos. One of her earliest roles was as Liz in “Jack and Bobby,” which appeared on The WB. She was also cast as Riley in “The Mountain.” Heard landed her first movie role in 2004 when she was cast as Maria in the film “Friday Night Lights.” Her next appearance was in an indie horror film, “Side FX.” Heard continued to land supporting roles, including in films such as “Drop Dead Sexy,” “You Are Here,” and “Price to Pay.” In the mid-2000s, Heard began to attain more prominent roles, including in “North Country” and “Alpha Dog.” She also appeared in an episode of “Criminal Minds.” During that episode, Heard appeared as Spencer Reid’s love interest.
Her next role was in “Hidden Palms.” She appeared as Greta Matthews. Prior to landing the role, Heard had to lose 25 pounds. To do so, she stopped drinking alcohol, went on a macrobiotic diet, and also increased her workouts. The show premiered in May of 2007, but it was eventually wrapped early, and only eight episodes were aired.
Heard began to generate media buzz when she was cast in the title role in the horror film “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.” The movie premiered in the fall of 2006 at the Toronto Film Festival. It was not until 2008 that the film was released in movie theaters. Around this time, Heard also made a sex tape that appeared on the Showtime program “Californication.” In 2008, she began filming for the movie “The River Why.” She also appeared in “The Joneses.” Both movies were independent films.
Following her role on “Hidden Palms,” Heard appeared in a short film. That was followed up with appearances in “Never Back Down,” a martial arts drama. One of Heard’s most notable appearances came when she was joined the cast of “The Informers” in 2009. During this time, Heard was quite busy with her career as she also filmed “The Stepfather” and “Ex-Terminators.”
Following filming of “Zombieland,” Heard landed a role in “The Rum Diary.” The movie also starred Johnny Depp and proved to be a breakout role for Heard. It has been rumored that Heard managed to win the role over two well-known actresses, Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. Heard later stated that playing the love interest of actor Johnny Depp in “The Rum Diary” was the best experience of her life to date.
In 2008, Heard received the Breakthrough Performance Award at the Young Hollywood Awards. The following year, she was nominated for a Detroit Film Critics Society Best Ensemble Award. In 2010, Heard received the Dallas Star Award from the Dallas International Film Festival.

When she came out, Heard stated that she believes it is the person that matters the most, not whether that person is a man or woman. Although she was raised in a Catholic family, Heard became an atheist when she was 16 years old after the death of her best friend in an auto accident.
