The Petzl Elios is a great rock-climbing helmet. Is it the right helmet for you? Read on to find out.
The Petzl Elios is a hybrid, all-purpose climbing helmet with a durable ABS outer shell and an inner lining of EPS foam. This helmet has a very adjustable attachment system and is available in two sizes, so just about anyone should be able to find a good fit. The current version of the Elios also has adjustable vents that can be closed to guard against the cold or opened to help in the heat, although my Elios did not have this feature. The smaller size weighs in at 9.9oz or 300g, while the larger helmet comes in at 10.8oz or 330g. This helmet is compatible with Petzl’s Vizion face shield and has four clips for attaching a headlamp. The Elios is available in white, orange, and blue, and it retails for around $65.95.
I used the Elios as my main climbing helmet for a number of years. It is a great all-around helmet. It’s combination of a hard shell and an EPS foam interior makes it a good defense against both falling rocks or ice and impacts caused by falls. The Elios is comfortable enough to wear all day long and durable enough that you can wear it every day for many seasons.
The Elios is pretty versatile. It is an effective helmet for caving and rock-climbing. With the addition of Petzl’s Vizion face shield, it becomes a fantastic helmet for ice climbing, providing an immense amount of protection for both head and face. I have seen the Elios with the Vizion face shield used as a helmet for riverboarding, although I am sure Petzl would point out that it is not certified for that use.
The Elios does not really have any negatives. It is not the lightest, strongest, most durable, or most comfortable of climbing helmets, but compromises well between these traits to be a helmet that works for any climbing situation.
The Petzl Elios is a fantastic all-around rock-climbing helmet that would be a good choice for just about any climber. It fits nicely between the light but slight Petzl Meteor III+ and the indestructible but heavy Petzl Ecrin Roc. I prefer the Elios to the Black Diamond Half Dome, which is another good, all-around climbing helmet.
