When we were invited to the remote Purcell Mountain Lodge in the Canadian Kootenay Rocky Mountains, I did not know what to expect. I really mean remote because there are no roads penetrating the wilderness and the only way to reach the lodge is by helicopter.
We arrived at the helicopter hanger and stepped on the large floor scale to join five other passengers for a group weigh. The flight only lasts ten minutes but what a flight!
The pilot flew over glaciers, mountains, rivers and some of the most breathtaking scenery. The helicopter climbed up to one of the tall mountain peaks and suddenly the peak disappeared and we looked straight down.
Finally we reached the lodge nestled above the alpine slopes of Bald Mountain, at the remote border of Canada’s Glacier National Park. I expected to “rough it” but the beautiful lodge offered everything anyone could want for a vacation in the mountains!
Purcell’s motto: “Unforgettable, Simple Luxury.” Yes, they said, luxury, and it is true! Imagine how difficult it must have been to transport all of the materials by helicopter when they built the lodge.
Constructed with hand-crafted log posts and beams, the building is surrounded by nature. The focus is on the 3,000 acre wilderness area around the lodge.
Being up there is a totally different experience. It’s so isolated.
During the summer, guides take guests to Bald Mountain one of the largest alpine meadows in southeastern British Columbia. They also swim in the mountain lakes.
The lodge has two guides during the summer and three in the winter to take care of all athletic abilities. One guide will go up high and the other stays in the middle.
If guests are above average hikers and love scrambling up to high places, they can take a high Alpine climb right up to the peak.
Guests can choose winter cross/ back country skiing, downhill skiing, Alpine touring, snowboarding, snowshoeing or tobogganing.
They usually hike from 10 am to 5 pm but it varies. The meadow is great for people were not avid hiders and want to get out and see the scenery and nature.
You could see up to the Rockies and down to the Bugaboos. The peaks are amazing for that. They see grisly and other wild animal sightings. Usually more tracks than live animals.
The price is all-inclusive including the helicopter, the guide, food, and accommodations. The lodge also has equipment for meetings and business conferences, internet connections, power Point Projector, and satellite television.
With only 10 rooms in the lodge, honeymooners or couples who just want to be away from everybody can stay in the chateau suite in a separate building. The Purcell Mountain Lodge is located in the Kootenay Rocky Mountains, in Golden, BC, Canada. www.purcellmountainlodge.com
