There is always more than one way to do anything and before I rush off to the doctor, I treat small health issues at home. These are some of my favorite essential oils for common medical problems. Remember to never use essential oils full strength. They must be diluted first because they are in concentrated form.
Frankincense-Aches and Pains
I love using frankincense for minor aches and pains. It’s considered an anti-inflammatory and is great for arthritis because it can reduce pain and improve function. My grandmother puts drops of frankincense into her lotion, rubs it directly on her hands and elbows each morning, and swears it helps more than the pills the doctor gave her.
Hyssop-Stress
I’m a worrier and sometimes I get stressed easily. Hyssop helps to reduce anxiety and stress, promotes a feeling of calmness, and helps induce peaceful sleep. I use between 8-10 drops in a nice hot bath before bed if I’m feeling restless.
Peppermint-Stomach
I love peppermint. I’m going through chemotherapy right now and it’s a lifesaver when my stomach is upset. If I’m especially nauseated I drink peppermint tea and use 8-10 drops of peppermint essential oil in an aromatherapy lamp. Peppermint is also thought to be helpful for people who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome.
Jasmine and Grapefruit-Skin
I use jasmine and grapefruit when my skin looks dull or dry. Both are packed full of antioxidants and can help neutralize free radicals. I add 25 drops to 8 ounces of unscented lotion. Jasmine can also be used in a pot of hot water on the stove for coughs.
Tea Tree-Antibacterial
Tea tree oil is great for its antibacterial properties. It’s also considered an antiviral, a fungacide, and an anti-inflammatory agent. Basically, it can be used for anything from athelets foot to arthritis. So far, I’ve never had the pleasure of enduring atheletes foot but I have used it to disinfect my home in the cold and flu season.
Pine-Diet
I had never really looked into using pine essential oil until I saw an episode of “Man Versus Wild,” and learned that pine needles have more vitamin C than the orange. I love natural products and discovered that pine can help reduce appetite when dieting. I guess that would also be handy if you’re stranded in the wilderness with no food.
Using essential oils most likely won’t cure any serious illness but they can help with common health issues. Essential oils can elevate the mood, relax you when you’re stressed out, and according to my grandmother they can really help with arthritis. Remember that a little goes a long way and always dilute.
