While hanging out at Wonderworld Comics outside of Detroit, I overheard a handful of “The Walking Dead” fans debating about where the survivors will find themselves during Season 4 of the zombie show. There were multiple ideas discussed with some being stronger than others. Robert Kirkman and the other creators of the show will have to decide if they will follow the comics or take the show in a different direction.
One fan of “The Walking Dead” believed the show would stay at the prison well into Season 4. This option could drag the show out as they have been at the prison throughout the first part of Season 3, and will probably be staying there until the final episode of the season. Also, it would not follow the flow of the first two seasons where the survivors found themselves having to locate another safe place as the final credits rolled. At the end of the first season, they got on the road towards Hershel’s farm and were outside of the prison during the last episode of Season 2.
Another fan thought it might be a good idea for the survivors to bunker down in Woodbury after defeating The Governor. Rick’s small group of survivors would have a difficult time defending Woodbury since The Governor needs guards at multiple posts around the converted town to watch for walkers. Rick has proven his distrust of new members to the group and it would be a stretch to say he would assume any survivors from Woodbury in the group to increase the manpower.
Wandering the towns
In the comic book version of “The Walking Dead,” Rick and Carl are separated from the other survivors and find themselves holding up in a small town near the prison. During this time, Carl’s character is strengthened as he is forced to take care of his ill father. The son also comes to terms with the possibility of Rick’s death for the first time. After Rick gets better, the pair find other survivors which made it out of the final raid on the prison alive. A few fans in the comic book store believed this would be the best option for Season 4.
Road to DC
Two fans thought the best idea would be to skip the separation and put Rick and crew on a road they find themselves on later in the comic. The creators of “The Walking Dead” might zoom ahead a handful of issues and put Rick and the survivors on the road to Washington DC. In the comics, Abraham and his small group of survivors convinced Rick to head to DC to see if the central portion of government was still alive and kicking. Season 4 could end as the viewers come to the realization that the government fell a long time ago.
The best combination might be found by mixing the separation of Rick and Carl from the rest of the group and flowing into meeting up with Abraham’s group around the mid-season break. This will allow for events such as crossing the cannibals, being held up in the church, the reintroduction of Morgan, Carl’s turn into an emotionless killer, the exposal of Eugene, and many other memorable moments from the comics. If all of these events are foreign to you, you need to start reading the print version of “The Walking Dead.”
