We all remember Tom Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch declaring his love for Katie Holmes (really, how could you forget that spectacle?), but even then, as he was swearing up and down he had found the love of his life, there seemed to be a resonance of doubt in the public that Cruise, 15 years Holmes’ senior, had really found the person he would be forever coupled with.
On Friday, the public’s suspicions of a less than long-lasting union were confirmed as the still junior starlet filed for divorce after five years of marriage to the aging action star. While the pair are certainly the focus of the gossip columns at the moment, the announcement of their sudden split is not the first celebrity split to “shock” the public. Cases in point:
Katy Perry and Russell Brand
While there wasn’t as much time to get used to the notion of singer Katy Perry and comedian/actor Russell Brand as a couple (they dated publicly for just a year before getting hitched in India), the concept of their coupling was always a bit hard to swallow. Immediately after meeting, the two were repeatedly quoted as being madly in love, but the rush to marry seemed to point to star crossed lovers. It wasn’t a big surprise that the bubbly songstress and the brash Brit were married just a year when Brand filed for divorce.
Courtney Cox and David Arquette
Admit it: you were a little surprised that foxy Courtney Cox and geeky David Arquette ever got together in the first place. In 1995, when they met on the set of the movie “Scream”, she was all the rage on “Friends” and he was…an Arquette. After marrying in 1999, though, you really did want to root for the couple who seemed to be the best of friends. When they separated late last year it came as a blindside for all since the couple were so frequently working on projects together without the notion of problems in the relationship. Though Arquette pushed to reconcile the marriage during their break, he filed divorce papers just a couple weeks ago to finalize the split.
Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian
What can you say about the marriage made for reality TV that hasn’t already been said? The couple met in late 2010, married in August of 2011 and divorced 72 days later. It couldn’t have been easy for Humphries, then on hiatus from basketball due to the NBA lockout, to handle the constant scrutiny that came with the constant filming of the joint Kardashian happenings, but the truth is, Kris and Kim were rarely seen together in their 10 weeks of marriage. He partied here, she partied there, and when it came time to split the only person in America surprised by the request was the man now most famous for being Kim Kardashian ‘s ex.
