Tom Cruise is an iconic American actor and producer known as much for his blockbuster movie roles as his tabloid exploits. He first appeared in the film Endless Love in 1981, but it wasn’t until Risky Business two years later that he became a major star. Since then, he’s starred in nearly 40 titles according to IMDB.com. As Tom’s superstar status gained momentum, paparazzi and the tabloids have followed his every move. Between his marriages to major movie stars and his close ties to Scientology, they’ve had plenty to write about.
But most of this is common knowledge. Here are a few things you may not know about Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise worked with the late director Tony Scott on one of the biggest blockbusters either of them made- Top Gun. But they also worked together on Days of Thunder and were in production on Top Gun 2 (according to Yahoo! Movies) before Tony Scott’s death earlier this year.
Tom Cruise’s marriage to Katie Holmes is actually his third marriage. His previous marriage was also a high profile one- to actress Nicole Kidman. Less well-known is his first marriage, also to an actress- Mimi Rogers. According to omg!, it was Mimi who introduced Tom to the Church of Scientology. Incidentally, all three of Tom’s marriages ended in separation or divorce when his wife reached the age of 33.
Tom Cruise is best known as an actor, but he began producing many of his own movies with Mission: Impossible. According to his official website, Tom Cruise conceived the idea of turning the ’60s television series Mission: Impossible into a movie franchise starring himself as point man Ethan Hunt. Since then, the series has grossed more than two billion dollars in worldwide sales.
While Tom has been nominated for three Oscars (for Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, and Born on the Fourth of July), he has never won any. He has however, won three Golden Globes, several MTV Movie Awards, and two People’s Choice Awards (from IMDB.com).
Scientology almost always seems to come up when talking about changes in Tom Cruise’s life. But is he really the spokesperson for the religion that many people see him as? An article from Yahoo! Movies reports the chairman of Scientology speaks ill of Tom behind his back. And recent reports covered in an omg! story seem to show that Tom is trying to put some space between himself and the members of the church.
