I have been to Glendale, Arizona, many times to visit with family and catch a baseball game or two. There are a lot of great restaurants in the area, but there are five that are the best to visit after taking in a baseball game at Camelback Ranch. Here they are:
1. La Piazza Al forno
In my personal experience, some restaurants have absolutely no business making pizza. La Piazza Al forno is definitely not one of them. The restaurant makes some of the best brick-oven style pizzas in Glendale. I’m not the only one that thinks so either. Celebrity chef Guy Fieri liked La Piazza Al forno enough to film a segment there for one of his “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” episodes. I’d suggest that you go for either the Italian Stallion ($13) or the Pizza Bianca ($12). The restaurant sits on West Glendale Avenue and is located 15 minutes from the Camelback Ranch ballpark. It typically opens Tuesday through Saturday at 11 a.m.
2. Dazzo’s Dog House
I will let you in on a little secret. The best hotdogs are not at the Camelback Ranch ballpark. They are found at Dazzo’s Dog House on West Glendale Avenue. It may take you 15 minutes to get there, but the dogs are so worth it! I am a fan of the beer sausage and the chili dog. I’d suggest that you buddy it up with a Dr. Pepper and a large order of chili cheese fries. Ah, Heaven! It usually opens at 10:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
3. Max’s Sports Bar and Restaurant
Giant golf balls behind the bar, a football helmet collection and sports fans talking trash are three clear signs that you’ve just stumbled into Max’s Sports Bar and Restaurant on North 47th Avenue. It is located roughly 20 minutes from the stadium and you can’t beat it for frosty mugs and sporting conversation. Try the homemade potato chips ($5) for starters and work your way up to a melt-in-your-mouth prime rib sandwich with bacon ($10). It tends to open daily.
4. Pete’s Fish & Chips
If you have a hankering for fried fish, there is no better place to set your sights on than Pete’s Fish & Chips on Glendale Avenue. It will take you 15 minutes to get there from the Camelback Ranch. I’d recommend the standard 5-piece fish and chips ($9) and a 20 ounce root beer float to wash it all down ($3). It generally opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday.
5. Haus Murphy’s German Restaurant
Haus Murphy’s German Restaurant on West Glendale Avenue is another place that has been featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” I have to agree with Guy Fieri on this one too, Haus Murphy’s German Restaurant is top notch. I am a sucker for their stuffed mushrooms dressed with an emmenthaler cream sauce ($9), the Bavarian pretzel with spicy mustard ($6) and the German sausage platter for two ($35). It is opens daily and it will only take you approximately 15 minutes to get there from the Camelback Ranch.
