In 2012, TNA solidified its position as one of the greatest pro wrestling promotions in the world. The Aces and Eights angle gripped the attention of wrestling fans while new stars ascended to the top of TNA in 2012. Take a look back at the top five TNA wrestlers of 2012.
5. Rob Van Dam
Nobody was more surprised than I was when RVD became the TNA X Division champion in 2012. RVD’s victory provided instant credibility to TNA’s stable of young stars. This could be one of RVD’s final major pushes and if it is, then it certainly made 2012 a year to remember for one of wrestling’s greatest stars.
4. Jeff Hardy
Considering the personal demons that Jeff Hardy has been fighting in recent years, his victory to gain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship was almost as big of an upset as RVD’s was in 2012. But when he is right, Hardy is still one of the most popular wrestlers in TNA. Hopefully, 2012 will be the first chapter in a new life for Jeff Hardy.
3. Bully Ray
It’s not easy for a wrestler to go from being the most hated bully on the roster to being the top defender in the locker room when facing an invasion. Throw in a relationship with the boss’s daughter and you can see why Bully Ray had such a great year in TNA in 2012. I have a feeling the Brooke Hogan angle will get a lot more interesting.
2. Austin Aries
Austin Aries is a glaring example of why wrestling matters in TNA. In 2012, Aries made the quantum leap from X Division star to TNA World Heavyweight champion. Aries also improved considerably on the mic as I recall him having to silence the fans just so he could deliver his promos at the height of his popularity in 2012.
1. Bobby Roode
Like Bully Ray, Bobby Roode went from a tag team wrestler to a singles star. Roode spent the first half of 2012 as the TNA World Heavyweight champion. In fact, his reign set the record for the longest World Heavyweight title reign in the promotion’s history. For setting this record, Bobby Roode had the greatest year of any TNA wrestler in 2012.
Honorable mention TNA wrestlers of 2012
Chavo Guerrero, Christopher Daniels, Devon, James Storm, Zema Ion
