When it’s time to go out, my girlfriend and I love Asian food. It’s the light sauces, perfectly cooked vegetables, seafood, and of course, we get to use chopsticks. Fortunately, there are a number of great Asian restaurants in the Chippewa Valley. This is Part One in a series of the Top Asian Restaurants in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Hmong Noodle Wrap
The Chippewa Valley is home to many Hmong people, who have brought their farming expertise to the region. This can be seen when shopping for healthy and robust veggies at the Farmer’s Market in Phoenix Park, and at restaurants like Noodle Wrap.
At Hmong Noodle Wrap, located at 3021 Mall Dr., you can decide between a variety of vegetable, soup, and noodle dishes, each showcasing different vegetables and sauces. You can then choose to add shrimp, chicken, or both to the dish. Noodle wrap serves up some traditional dishes like Sweet and Sour chicken and Pad Thai while also serving specialties like Pad Hmong and my favorite, Hot & Spicy Shrimp.
What I really love about Noodle Wrap is the titular Noodle Wrap. The Noodle Wrap is similar to an egg roll but is filled with rice noodles and cabbage. You can order these plain or with your choice of chicken or shrimp. The wraps themselves are golden fried and delicious on their own, but they really come alive with the peanut oil that is served on the side.
Pad Thai serves my favorite Asian dish in Eau Claire, if not my favorite dish in Eau Claire, period. Many would agree that Pad Thai’s Red Curry deserves a blue ribbon.
Pad Thai, located at 203 N. Barstow, offers a variety of traditional Thai dishes, including the titular Pad Thai and other noodle, rice, soup, and curry dishes and appetizers, with the option to choose your level of spiciness. I have tried several of these dishes and they have all been delicious, but the Red Curry is on a level all its own. The curry comes with rice and vegetables, but it’s so delicious you’ll want to grab a spoon and sip it like soup.
In addition to being one of the best places for sushi in Eau Claire, Shanghai Bistro serves delicious and creative dishes including my favorite, the Strange Flavored Chicken.
Despite a great menu, what I really love about Shanghai Bistro is the atmosphere. The mood lighting suggests a hip nightclub, as do the twin bars. One is a full service bar featuring its own specialty drinks, sake menu, and microbrews. The other is a full sushi bar with sashimi, nigiri, and roll options. This image is even more fitting on Friday and Saturday nights, when the joint is hoppin’ as diners are entertained by elegant jazz from a range of performers from the Chippewa Valley and surrounding areas.
This atmosphere-and especially the jazz-makes Shanghai Bistro a great spot for an elegant date. People have been known to cuddle up and dance during the slower numbers.
In an upcoming article, I discuss 3 more of the Top Asian Restaurants in Eau Claire, Wisconsin: Golden Dragon, Fuji Steakhouse, and Asia Café.
