Texas has plenty of hotspots for Mother’s Day events. On a warm spring day, what better way to go out there and check out these places with Mom in tow? Depending on her hobbies, one or two of my picks will definitely strike her fancy.
Flea market – Moms love to collect vintage and handmade ornaments to decorate the house. Take advantage of the opportunity to let her pick nice additions to the home at the open flea markets. Austin Flea is the place to start, to be held at Highball Austin on Mother’s Day weekend. Admission is free.
Buffet/Brunch – Let mom enjoy an amazing array of food in Mother’s buffets and brunches all over Texas. Sagra, Austin is one ($24 per person), Central 214 ($48 per adult, $15 per children 12 and under, and Coast Global Seafood ($34.95 per adult, $9.95 children 12 and under), just to name a few.
Concert – Austin is the music capital of Texas so it’s no wonder plenty of Mother’s Day concerts are going to be held here. It’s always free and held annually, featuring popular tunes and musical numbers.
For $25, you can snag a seat for your mom at the Meyerson Symphony Center with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra as the main performers.
The HCC Choir in Houston will hold its own Mother’s Day concert for free at the Spring Branch Campus Performing Center. Show starts 7:30 p.m. on May 8.
Flowers/Gardening – San Antonio will hold the Wildflower Walk on Mother’s Day at 1:00 p.m. An event that will be fun for moms to do with kids since the goal is to discover the most popular wildflowers of Texas.
The Dallas Arboretum is not about buying flowers for Mom on Mother’s Day, but about exploring Texas flowers in a huge area covered with a variety of flowers retailers don’t even sell in their catalog. How about a live jazz trio and photography session to match?
Fashion/Beauty – Going to the mall is probably one of the most popular things to do on Mother’s Day — but don’t get caught in the cliche. The Galleria in Dallas will hold the Nordstrom Frill Seekers for moms who still like sporting and getting fitted with nice lingerie. You may find that plenty of salons will offer package deals such as manicure and pedicure with free chair massage.
Others – San Antonio will hold Catholic Homeschooling Conference and Book Fair on May 18 while in Houston, Mommy’s Day Bash will be celebrated at the Children’s Museum from May 6 -12. Consider taking a Starfleet Mother’s Day Cruise in Galveston on May 8. The two-hour cruise includes food, live music, flowing drinks, and dancing. If you’re too far from the coast, start digging for a $2500 gem at the Diamond Dig in Dallas (Lone Star Park). Tickets start at $5.
