Toradora! Episode 10: “Fireworks”–Recap

by pop tug

We begin the episode with Taiga and Ryuji who, it turns out, did not get even a little sleep the night before because of the strange occurrences of the night before. They discuss Taiga’s plan to scare Minori so Ryuji can come to the rescue. Ryuji is doubtful of this particular plan, but Taiga is still determined.

Then they are surprised by Kitamura, who asks them what they are up to. He quickly finds out about the plan to scare Minori, and scolds them for trying to scare Minori. Taiga lies about the motivation behind the plan to scare Minori. She says that Minori actually likes being scared and Taiga and Ryuji are conspiring to surprise her. Kitamura apparently believes Taiga’s story and is very enthusiastic about wanting to join in. He also wants to bring Ami into this and heads off. Then we go to the opening credits.

Next, we see Ryuji and Minori in the kitchen. Ryuji is getting some lunches ready for a trip to the beach. Minori volunteers to assist, which makes Ryuji very flustered. She also teases him about his excellent cooking abilities, which makes him even more flustered. (She does not seem to be aware of the affect she is having on him.) The scene briefly switches to Ami, who is apparently listening in on this conversation.

Later, the kids get ready to go to the beach. Kitamura says that they are going to take Minori to a cave where they will set a trap to scare her. Ami is not around, though Kitamura says that she will also be participating in this prank. Ryuji goes to Ami’s room to ask if she is going to participating in this prank. They talk, and Ami teases Ryuji. (Teasing Ryuji is everyone’s favorite hobby.) Ami wants to know the reason behind this prank, which Ryuji is reluctant to admit. Because he will not tell her, she says that she will not help him.

At the beach, Ami continues to refuse to help with the prank. Kitamura however is confident that the plan will still work, even without Ami’s help. He heads off under the cover of a restroom break and returns to tell Kitamura that everything is ready at the cave. Minori overhears and asks for some clarification. Despite having previously stated she would not help, Ami tells Minori about the cave and suggests that they do a little cave exploring. Minori is very enthusiastic about this adventure!

The kids head out to the cave, where it is revealed that Kitamura is apparently not very good at coming up with good, actually scary pranks. With the pranking over, the kids split up, to do a little exploring. Ryuji and Ami end up alone together. Ami asks Ryuji a lot of questions about Minori, and seems very flirtatious with him. They talk for a while, and then they both hear Minori scream, and head off to find her. When they reach Taiga and Kitamura, they are told that “something took Minori.”

Apparently, they are not alone in the cave.

Kitamura’s flashlight goes out, so he borrows Ryuji’s. He heads off, presumably to look for Minori. Strange and spooky noises are heard, and then Kitamura lets out a scream and everything goes dark. There is some more scary noises, causing Taiga to panic. She runs off, trips on something and falls into a large puddle. When they catch up to Taiga, it is revealed that Minori and Kitamura were working together to scare Taiga and Ryuji in retaliation for their plan to scare Minori so Ryuji could play hero. Minori explains that she knew from the beginning because Taiga and Ryuji’s pranks were too naïve to really work on her.

That night, the kids are out on the beach playing with roman candles and sparklers. Ryuji and Ami have a talk where Ryuji admits that he would be “lonely” without Ami. He further clarifies by stating that he is more concerned about Ami being lonely or feeling isolated. Ami says that she wasn’t thinking of herself being lonely, and heads back to the house. Ami says that she was not thinking of herself as being lonely, and heads back to the house.

A little later, Ryuji and Minori have a little heart to heart talk. She apologizes for scaring him earlier, and Ryuji verbally tiptoes around the subject of his crush on Minori. Minori asks him why he wanted to scare her. Ryuji fibs slightly and says that it was only because Taiga had said that Minori was afraid of horror. Minori does not entirely buy this statement, stating that Ryuji is not the sort of guy who would play a prank just scare her. Ryuji says that he wanted to “show her ghosts.” (Which I guess is a roundabout way of saying that he was interested in something that Minori is interested in.)

Minori suggests that the next time, they could go look for UFOs or “striker snakes.” While they are talking, Ryuji points out some fireworks are being set off over the water. Minori enthusiastically greets the sudden appearance of the fireworks as “evidence” that a UFO has exploded. The scene ends with Ami, who is back at the beach house, with a sad expression on her face.

We end with the kids going back home after their beach trip. Ryuji mentions that he wants to go grocery shopping as soon as possible. Taiga tells him not to talk like a housewife around her when she is tired. This does not stop Ryuji from mentioning a sale. They head off down the street together and we go to the closing credits.
