Living a normal life is complicated enough already. Taking the kids to swim team, cross country, and other school events keep everyone busy. So when do you have time to take care of yourself.
Now throw in business travel and making sure you stay fit becomes a tough juggling act that few succeed at. Too often, I see too many colleagues take their health for granted especially when they travel. Just because the have a corporate card, that does not give them carte blanche on what they order during dinner time with a client or customer. It’s a vicious cycle where they eat too much then can’t get up to do a workout. They eventually run ragged and end up having cardiac troubles or other bad illnesses.
It all depends on what is important to you. The following are some tips to improve the odds that help you maintain your waist line during those business trips.
Tip #1 – Write down your “Why.” Basically, what is your motive? If your “Why” is strong enough, you will put avoid ordering that 32 oz Porterhouse or the Hot Fudge Sundae that the waiter says is not on the menu (I will save that story for another time.)
Tip #2 – Plan ahead. Similar to knowing your agenda and game plan for your meetings, so should your exercise program and nutrition.
Tip #2a – Know the restaurants you plan on going to and review their menus before hand and choose accordingly.

Tip #2b – Know what workouts you plan on doing. If you are training for a marathon, typically you have the number of miles and the type of training run you will perform on a given day. Map out a run before you leave, or ask the hotel front desk if they have a route to follow. If the hotel has a pool, go for a swim. For many that work with portable computers and laptops, they will pop in a P90X, Insanity or Turbofire DVD and follow along Tony Horton, Shaun T or Chalene Johnson.
Tip #4 – Keep your equipment simple. Unless you are Arnold Schwarzenegger or some other famous actor or rock star, most likely you will not have a trailer full of gym equipment traveling with you. Sometimes the gym at the hotel is very limited and most likely not in great shape. So count on yourself to be your exercise equipment. A pair of running shoes will come in handy if you plan on running. Exercise bands easily fit in your luggage making them great for traveling, and some of those bands will kick your butt! If you have enough room, I know some people will bring a yoga mat.
Tip #5 – Get enough rest. Business can raise your blood pressure and you need rest! Some travelers will bring their own pillow to get some shuteye.
