Many people feel they can just buy a dog and it would be a perfect pet. That is not true; how many people can boast they have perfect children? Dogs go through maturity stages the same way that children do. They have to be taught the rules of the house unless you want them to destroy your house.
Dogs also have different personalities the same way as people have different personalities. Some dogs will need little to no training while other dogs will require a great deal of training. Dog owners need to understand their dogs if they want to own them.
First and for most, what every dog trainer needs is to have some patience. If you don’t have the patience then you should not consider getting a pet of any kind because you will have to work a bit to get the animal adapted to your ways.
Some people will use the excuse they do not have the time to train the dog. If you really have a hectic schedule and you don’t have the time then there are professional dog trainers that can help you. Unfortunately, many dogs are kicked to curb or sent to the pound each year because their owners complain they cannot handle their pets.
According to the ASPCA around 5-7 million animals are sent to the animal shelters nationwide each year. Sixty percent of the dogs are then euthanized. Furthermore, 20 percent of the dogs returned to the shelters were purchased from the shelters in the first place.
Was the pet really given a chance? If you allow your pet to be wild it will be wild. Just like humans have to learn the rules of society so do your furry friends. Psychologists point to the case of Victor of Aveyron who was found in the forest on January 8, 1800. He was found in France and known as l’enfant sauvage because he was wild and did not know any civilized ways. This is a remarkable case to show how even humans will grow up wild without training from their family and from society at large. If this could happen to a human who has more intellectual capacities than an animal why would pet owners assume that dogs just instinctively know what to do?
Victor had to be trained; he did not even know the difference between hot and cold. He could not speak; he didn’t understand anything in the human world. Yet, he knew to survive in the wild. If you want your dogs to do what you want them to do you have to train them as well.
Don’t expect them to know that chewing up your slippers is wrong; puppies cut their teeth just like babies do. Don’t expect them not to relieve their bodily functions in the house. This is a normal bodily function. Your baby did not know to go to the bathroom until he or she was potty trained either. My basset hound, Rosie, didn’t come to us potty trained. We had lots of accidents until she finally learned to go to the door when she had to go. We still can’t leave our shoes out where she can get them because she still thinks they are her chew toys. Until she learns that our shoes are off limits we have to keep them out of her reach. Give your pet the same care and understanding you would give any one of your children and both you and your dog will be the happier for it.
