Hanging baskets come in all types from cheap plastic pots with matching hangers to sculptured metal varieties with natural liners. These are the most popular containers found in stores. I prefer unique hanging baskets, especially around my deck. I have searched online for unique varieties, and I have discovered many new options to dress up my deck with flowers, vines and more.
Hanging Baskets for the Birds
Last spring I purchased a set of very unique hanging baskets for my parent’s deck. I found hanging wire baskets with attached hummingbird feeders. My mother enjoys watching the hummingbirds from her kitchen, and the planters with feeders provided a great way to decorate her deck with birds and beautiful blooms. She planted bright red petunias in the lined planters, and she had a record number of visitors at her feeders last year.
Unique Tiered Basketry
I purchased a set of unique tiered hanging baskets for my deck. Each one was comprised of three metal baskets, and they were connected with chains. I planted vines and deep purple petunias in the largest basket on the bottom, medium purple petunias in the center, and asparagus ferns and light purple petunias in the top tier. Purple is my favorite color, and with the asparagus ferns and vines, they looked incredible.
Consider a Solar Hanger for Your Baskets
I wanted my plants to remain beautiful all season long. The biggest problem I had next to the soil drying out too quickly was uneven lighting. The sides facing the house and the planter posts usually died off. During my search, I found a very unique and useful tool to solve the problem. I discovered solar hangers that slowly rotated the plants. They worked beautifully. I had mounds of beautiful blooming flowers with lush foliage adorning my deck all season long.
Lighted Hanging Baskets for Live Plants and Flowers
I lined my entire deck with hanging basketry, and I found a unique way to light up every other one. I purchased hanging baskets with lights. They were quite pricey, but they were absolutely beautiful. I filled the lighted basketry with New Guinea impatiens, and I could not believe how beautiful they were. They looked iridescent! They were the most eye catching hanging baskets I had ever created, and I received many compliments. People did not realize they were live flowers.
Use unique hanging baskets to embellish your deck instead of using cheap plastic varieties. The flowers and plants are the stars of the show, but the containers are the stage. The hanging baskets are just as important as the flowers, vines, ferns and other plants, and they can turn an ordinary deck into a showplace.
