Has a small budget been holding you back from updating your kitchen? Here’s good news. It doesn’t have too! There are several ways to update your kitchen for less than you think. Enjoy a fresh new look, double your storage space, and give the entire room a facelift for an affordable price.
The truth is, no matter what the size of your family, most of us spend a great deal of time together in the kitchen. That’s why the kitchen is one of the busiest rooms of the house, and one of the most frequently renovated. Moreover, if you think you may sell one day, updating the kitchen will yield a big financial return on investment.
Here are a few ways to update your kitchen for less:
Add more storage
Storage is a primary issue for most of us. And, let’s face it – a cluttered and overflowing kitchen is an eyesore, not to mention an inefficient mess. Give your space a fresh new look by adding attractive storage.
Shelving – Store plates, mugs, and cups atop open shelving. This will not only declutter the cabinets, but will add a decorative element to the room when you display only your most colorful dishes.
Corner shelves – Add storage to the ends of your wall cabinets with corner shelves. This area is the perfect spot for small items such as spices, fingertip bowls, and other odds and ends.
Roll-a-way island – Really change the look of your kitchen with a roll-a-way island. Available in wood, stainless steel, wicker, and other attractive finishes, a portable island is there when you want it and out of the way when you don’t. It offers storage beneath and a work station on top. Best of all, you can buy one for around $ 100.00 or less.
Dress up your cabinets
Your kitchen cabinets may look dull, dingy, and outdated, but they are surprisingly simple to dress up. In as little as a day, and for a ridiculously cheap price, you can update your kitchen with the look of new cabinets
New hardware – Remove your old hinges, knobs, and drawer pulls, and replace them with something new. Head out to your local home improvement store and you’ll find a great assortment of cabinet hardware for $ 1.00 or less a piece.
Scrub the cabinets – Most of us simply don’t clean our cabinets the way we should. You’ll be surprised at what a thorough cleaning can do to their appearance. After all, cabinets are subject to food and beverage spills and grease splatter, not to mention that they receive a lot of wear and tear from daily use. Use these tips for cleaning cabinets inside and out.
Open things up – If you have cabinet doors that are severely worn, faded, or even chipped, your best bet may be to simply remove them. Update your kitchen by opening things up a bit. Completely remove damaged doors and leave them open instead. If only the door fronts are damaged, consider replacing the front with glass panels.
There is no other home improvement project as inexpensive as paint. For around $ 25.00 you can repaint the kitchen a bright color and dramatically change the look of the room. Red is a popular color that stimulates the senses. Yellow invigorates the mind and body. Green is relaxing and reflective of nature. The color you choose for your kitchen will impact the way you feel in the room, so be considerate of what you place within. Find out more about color symbolism in interior decorating.
Update your appliances
Take a good look around your kitchen. If you have accumulated your small and large appliances years apart, chances are their finishes clash considerably. Perhaps your toaster is a bit rusty or faded, or your blender is stained, too. When combined together, these small things will make a kitchen look unpleasant. One way to update your kitchen is to renew your appliances. Replace inexpensive appliances, such as your coffee maker and toaster, with new models that match the finish on your larger appliances. If your large appliances are in good working order, simply cover them with coordinating stainless steel adhesive sheets (available at home improvement stores) to give the room a streamlined look.
