The UK has definitely upped its cool quotient. First Will and Kate tied the knot in the nuptials watched ’round the world. Then, London became the world’s stage again for the majestic Olympics. Perhaps not since The Beatles has the home of Buckingham Palace, Harrods, Big Ben, Manchester United, the BBC and the River Thames been so much the place to be.
Swinging London is known for many things. Besides the Royals, the Parliament and the tremendous sense of history, London has a rocking nightlife, great pubs and a premier restaurant scene. So if you’re heading across the pond to kick it Union Jack style, you definitely want to indulge in traditional British dishes.
Londoners indulge in a range of delicious fare. Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, Shepherd’s pie, roast beef, bangers and mash, Cumberland sausage and black pudding are cultural favorites lauded far and wide. Those on plant based diets may crave eats of a different sort, however.
Let’s face it, a traditional English breakfast includes: eggs, fried bread, sausages, bacon, mushrooms and baked beans. This is the land of carnivores.
If you’re not a meat eater or just want healthier options, don’t despair! You can still get your eat on in the ‘groovy, baby’ city of “Austin Powers.” Bubbles and steak, which includes cabbage and potatoes, is not the only choice.
For vegans, vegetarians, the health conscious or those on plant based diets of any sort, here’s where to yum it up in England’s capital city also known as “The Big Smoke.”
Mildred’s Vegetarian Restaurant
No list of best veggie eats would be complete without Mildred’s. Mildred’s is a famous vegetarian restaurant located in Soho. Take the train to Piccadilly Circus and be prepared to indulge. The mushroom pie, sweet potato curry, butternut squash and ravioli will make fans out of the most discerning of diners. London isn’t the easiest place to be a vegetarian but Mildred’s even has yummy vegan ice cream.
Find Mildred’s at 45 Lexington Street, London W1F 9AN. They also offer take out but feature only beer and wine as alcohol choices. For more information call 020 7494 1634 or visit their website.
