“Does anybody have a link for the game?” It’s a question I often see on Twitter whenever multiple sporting events are taking place. Watching sports online isn’t just about saving money, although the fact that you can do so for free is undoubtedly a plus. Doing so allows you to watch multiple events at the same time from the comfort of your home, and also watch games that may not be showing at a local sports pub, bar or restaurant.
It’s been awhile since I’ve put one of these pieces together, and thus some things have changed. I worded the title as I did to point out that these same methods aren’t just for watching football or soccer online for free. If there’s a significant game, pro wrestling pay-per-view or other similar event airing on TV, you’ll probably be able to watch it online for free using the resources listed below.
Watch NFL & college football, soccer and other sports online for free: What you need
It is very likely that you won’t need all of these software programs. Those of you looking to just watch soccer and/or football online for free could probably get away with having just Sopcast and StreamTorrent, for example. Those of you looking to watch everything under the sun, including tennis, cricket and Aussie Rules football, may find that having just Flash enabled and Sopcast downloaded isn’t enough. Because of that, I’ve included links for these video software programs: Sopcast, TVU Networks, TVAnts, StreamTorrent, Veetle.
Two things you don’t need but should probably have when attempting to watch sports online for free are an anti-virus program and an application that blocks ads in your Web browser. I’ve never once experienced a problem regarding viruses while using these resources, but you should always have a reliable anti-virus program enabled. An “Add-On” such as Adblock Plus for Firefox will prevent annoying little pop-ups from appearing throughout the game you’re watching online.
Watch NFL & college football, soccer and other sports online for free: The websites
The two websites I use to watch sports online for free are The First Row and Wiziwig TV. I am aware of a few others, but I’ve found those two resources to be the most reliable and most trustworthy. Go to either website, and you will see tabs for different sports, such as “Am. Football,” “Football” and “Basketball.” Click the tab for the sport you want to watch, and a list of games will appear on the page. Click the necessary link for the game you want to watch, and it will open either in your Web browser or in one of the software programs listed in the previous section. The First Row only utilizes video streams that play in browsers, and the website also recommends not using Internet Explorer. Wiziwig streams are determined by the preference of the uploader.
I wanted to point two things out before wrapping things up. First, I am not an uploader/host of streams for either website, so I cannot comment on the quality of any particular stream. Second, please note that this was posted in September 2012. If you’re reading this in July 2013 and experiencing problems, it’s possible that things within a website/program have changed, or that a website has even been taken down.
