Soon, there will be one more way for New Yorkers to get around. Starting in March 2013, a new bike sharing program called Citi Bike will launch. Citi Bike is like a library for bikes. Borrow a bike at one location, ride it, and then return it to another location. Citi Bike is intended for those needing to take short trips.
There will be 600 stations and 10,000 bikes available in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Station locations were chosen from suggestions made by New Yorkers by submitting feedback through an online suggestion map. Station locations are not set in stone and the DOT will work to refine the locations if necessary.
At each station there will be a kiosk with a touch-screen and map of the station locations and the bikes will be secured in a docking system until someone is ready to rent them. Access time is purchased in either 24-hour, 7-day, or annual increments. Users purchasing either 24-hour or 7-day time slots will be given an unlock code to remove the bike from the dock and annual members will be given a special key to unlock the bike.
24-Hour or 7-Day passes can be purchased at Citi Bike kiosks using a credit card. Once the purchase is made, the biker will be given a code that unlocks the bike from the dock. If the trip is 30 minutes or less, the ride will be free, but if the trip last longer than 30 minutes, there will be an overtime fee. The time starts from the moment the bike is unlocked and ends when it is returned to a station.
