Can you believe that in July of 1879 there was a five and ten, nickel and dime store? According to Wikipedia.org, Woolworth Bros. started this concept. This store became F.W. Woolworth. Later in the 20th century because of inflation, variety stores started evolving such as the dollar store.
When I have traveled in Georgia, I have observed many .99 stores. I definitely like that. My thinking is why pay $5 or $6.00 when you can pay .99 or just $1.00.
In my article, Do You Buy Dollar Store Products?, I mentioned the glass cleaner that I used to purchase. Since that time, the brands have changed and I do not prefer the new brand. I find I get quite a bit of streaking from their new brand, but that does not mean I stopped using all of the dollar store products. I have found so many good ones. An example of this is in the Review of Vitamin E Face Cream. I discuss the Vitamin E Face moisturizing cream that I purchased at the Dollar Store for just $1.00. In addition, a good thing about the Dollar Store is that occasionally some items may only be $.50. I have not had major problems with cleaning supplies either.
According to Learn Vest, you should proceed with caution when purchasing food at the Dollar Stores. The expiration dates are something to watch for, because they may be past their freshness date. So far, I have not purchased many frozen food items except for the small individual microwaveable peach pies. They are quite tasty. I just tested them. Although you can purchase them at the Dollar Tree, Kroger sells them for only $ .74. Learn Vest also cautions against batteries and electronics stating they are prone to leakage. I can attest to that. I bought batteries at the dollar store and within a weak they were leaking.
I am forever, testing and trying new products from the Dollar Store. In my article More of My Favorite Things in 2011, I discuss lipstick that I found for only $1.00. I had looked and looked, but never was able to find it dark enough for me until I found it at the dollar store. I had checked with Avon. Avon at one time sold a darker lipstick, but they did not sell it long. Therefore, I had not been able to find a shade that I liked with them. I even found a red shade that I like at the Dollar store. I never wore red before, because I felt my lips were too big for that bright a color.
According to Money Crashers, books and greeting cards are good deals at the Dollar store. I do agree. I have purchased several greeting cards and numerous hardcover reading books for my grandchildren. When toddlers are small, they can easily tear the pages from the books not necessarily intentionally. Hardcover books are very sturdy from the dollar store and less likely to tear. They have a variety. I especially like the biblical books for the little ones. So what are your thoughts? Do you shop at the Dollar store?
