You only need to watch current United States Heavyweight Champion Antonio Cesaro wrestle once to see that he will be around for a long time. He has the power, wrestling ability and character to go a very long ways in this business. Cesaro is clearly a solid worker and will be around for as long as he chooses to be. The thing that will make Cesaro a star, however, is not as readily available. I once was not as high on Cesaro for becoming a main eventer. That all changed during Monday Night Raw on December 3, 2012. On that show, Cesaro showed that he can work a crowd and the mic. Those are the two areas that I would have thought he would lag in. I was wrong.
Working the Mic With Wrestling Talent is a Good Thing
When you mix great mic work with wrestling ability, you get a very special type of wrestler. Chris Jericho, Ric Flair, HBK, Triple H, C.M. Punk and countless others have proved that theory a million times over. Now nobody is saying that Cesaro is on the level of those wrestlers, but he could be. Down the road he certainly could be.
What Was So Special About Monday Night?
I attended that show live and during a commercial break at the lead in to the match, Cesaro took the mic and talked to the large crowd in Greensboro. He had them worked into a lather long before the show came back on the air and it was not simply with anti-American things. It was with jokes and various other things that showed he understood the psychological side of the business. He had the entire city of Greensboro hating him within minutes and it made that match electric when it went live.
Will Cesaro Be Able to Sustain His Momentum?
The truth is, Cesaro can do whatever he sets his mind to. He has the physical skills, the backing and the mental skills to do whatever he chooses. If he is willing to apply himself and truly dedicate himself to the craft, he could end up being one of the better wrestlers of this generation. The ability is there. It is now up to him to use it.
At TLC in December, Cesaro is set to defend the United States Championship against R-Truth. If he retains the belt, and all indications say he will, then Cesaro will be ready for bigger and better things when the Royal Rumble comes calling in January.
