By all accounts, the news that Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise was a boon to the weekly tabloids, which thrive on this sort of news. It seems people just can’t get enough of the Tom-Katie divorce.
According to the The New York Post, sales were up in many of the major tabloids. And why wouldn’t they be? The TomKat split has everything that makes for a great headline: super wealthy Tom, with an estimated net worth of $250 million, what with his fabulous $30 million mansion and private plane. It’s a life most of us can’t imagine.
Undoubtedly the most famous member of the Scientology Church, Tom has at times come under fire for his beliefs. The church has been referred to as a cult, with secretive and weird practices. Some former members have been more than willing to talk openly about the church’s practices and this undoubtedly has the suits over at the Scientology press room squirming.
Couch-jumping Tom is 17 years older than Katie Holmes, and he seduced the pretty young woman when she was 25. Their courtship proceeded at break-neck speed; he proposed to her after only six weeks of dating. She willingly abandoned her Catholic faith to embrace his beliefs.
Caught in the middle is adorable 6-year-old Suri Cruise, whom we have watched grow up and is suddenly school age.
Speculation abounds: was it the church of Scientology that drove them apart? Was Katie afraid to have little Suri indoctrinated in the church? Was it Tom’s controlling ways? In any event, the divorce was settled at lightning speed, and it has been widely suggested this was to avoid the Church of Scientology, and Tom, from being dragged through the mud.
Shortly before Katie’s filing, Tom was filming a movie in Iceland, ironically named “Oblivion.” And Oblivious is exactly what he was to Katie’s divorce filing. The couple, according to several reports, was said to have been together for father’s day; Katie and Suri arrived in Iceland via private plane.
Photo’s shown in the National Enquirer from their day together show a miserable looking Katie. As she sat in a Sushi restaurant with Tom and Suri, it had to be weighing heavily on her mind that she was about to pull off a coup – filing for a divorce from the mega-rich and powerful Tom without anyone’s knowledge. Tabloid reports claim she had a disposable cell phone so Tom could not monitor her calls.
Fortunately for Katie, she has her family on her side. Dad Martin Holmes, a prominent lawyer in Ohio, was said to have been advising Katie, who hired several lawyers in various states.
Most of the tabloids seem to be siding with Katie. There’s talk of a lawsuit by Tom for the National Enquirer’s cover on their July 23 edition, “Tom’s House of Horrors.” What kind of secrets will be revealed? Just what kind of hell was Katie made to endure during her five-year marriage?
Stay tuned: there’s certainly more to this story.
