When we travel, my wife, son, and I like finding the local businesses in our vacation destinations. This is especially true for dining. We have our share of favorite chain restaurants, but we find the best restaurants are the family-owned and operated diners and cafes in which the owners can prepare their food the way they and their customers want it rather than following the national managers’ rules.
Ziggy’s Café – Havelock, NC
I normally do not review restaurants, but we found one fantastic café during our 2012 Christmas vacation to New Bern, North Carolina, while out touring the surrounding areas. We decided to stop for lunch in Havelock, NC. We found Ziggy’s Café in the Westbrook Shopping Center on U.S. Highway 70 in Havelock. We were amazed at just how good such a cozy café could be. The food was excellent and very well-priced, and the service was unbeatably fast and friendly.
Our dining experience
I was in the mood for a salad, but when I saw Hawaiian omelet listed on the Ziggy’s Café special board, I changed my mind, and I am glad I did. The omelet came with two large scrambled eggs wrapped around a mound of ham, bacon, pineapple, and cheese blended together flawlessly. I had never tried this omelet before, but I must say I will have it again. It came with home fries, baked golden brown and crispy. They needed no sauce or seasoning.
My wife had the club sandwich with waffle fries. The bread was toasted to perfection, and she received more than enough fries for her and for us to share. Our son is a pancake fanatic, and Ziggy’s Café satisfied his craving. He had the fluffiest pancakes with the sweetest syrup that he has had in a long time. These pancakes put those of the popular national breakfast restaurants to shame. He shared his sausage with me. The extra large plump links were full of flavor and had just the right amount of spice.
Other menu items
Ziggy’s Cafe has plenty of lunch and dinner entrees, salads, burgers, hot and cold open-faced and closed sandwiches, and beverages to satisfy anyone’s casual dining cravings.
Wish we had one in our neighborhood
We entered Ziggy’s Cafe hungry and came out stuffed. Our entire bill for three came to only $26.00, tip included. We then headed out of Havelock to continue our vacation. We enjoy most of our vacation dining, but the local cafes always give the best service. I sure wish we had Ziggy’s Café in our own neighborhood.
